In life, it is easy for us to get so caught up in a destination that we miss the opportunities along the way. That’s the lesson of this photo. When I first glimpsed this scene, I was driving along the Hume Highway on my way to some business meetings in Melbourne. The potential of this old farmhouse in a sea of purple was obvious – but I knew I would have to wait until sunrise to get the right light, and I didn’t think I had the time. Then I thought: “Forget the meetings! I’m going to stop.” I found the owners of the farm, and they were so friendly. They not only fed us, but they let us camp overnight in their shearing shed (with the smell of lanolin in our noses all night!). In the morning I was able to get this shot. What a blessing it was that I did. Some time after my visit, the old house finally collapsed. If I hadn’t seized the opportunity when I saw it, I would almost certainly have missed out.
