According to the Bible, Jesus often retreated to lonely places to pray. Mount Arbel, located behind Capernaum (Jesus´ center of ministry), may well have been one of his favorite retreats. I took a taxi and then walked to reach this spot and was rewarded with a magnificent view of the sun rising over the Sea of Galilee. The sky and water glowed with light, like stained glass backlit by fire. I felt the presence of Jesus strongly in this place, but wondered how he would have reached this high point. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a shepherd appeared at the summit. He had taken an ancient shepherd´s path up the face of the mountain. I felt my question had been answered - this area has changed little since the time of Jesus.
