Ellery Creek Big Hole is one of the most popular and picturesque swimming holes in the West MacDonnell National Park. Towering red cliffs and graceful river gums also make this an ideal photographic location. The deep water that flows down from the West MacDonnell Ranges stays deliciously cool even in the midst of a harsh desert summer. I had been waiting further down the creek for the right light, but then felt compelled to go up further to the pool itself. When I got there I was excited to discover how perfectly still everything was – not even a breath of wind to ripple the surface. I had never seen it so glassy. Over on the right you can clearly see a rope hanging from one of the trees where I’m sure many a person has practised their Tarzan moves.
