In the wet season, whole areas of Arnhem Land are covered in billabongs. The road we were on, in fact, cut through a series of such waterholes in almost surreal fashion. This photograph was taken in the very early morning and celebrates one tiny slice - a watery segment of bright vegetation and glimmering darks. I loved the beauty of the lilies here, and the varying textures of the reeds and weed; the flowers in the foreground just seemed to pop up out of the water, as if saying hello. There was mystery too in the unknown shadows. Who knew what creatures might be lurking beneath the lilies - even saltwater crocodiles were possible here! We didn’t venture in, of course.
