I needed the permission of local Aboriginal elders to visit this location. What a rich place I discovered it to be. Out of sight, in the mountains and gorges, many ancient Aboriginal painting sites are to be found, and at sunrise (as in this photograph) the rock formations are soaked with a deep ochred opulence. There is richness of another kind at the billabong in the foreground. In Arnhem Land, wherever there is water there is an abundance of life. Wildlife gathers here to feed and drink and for countless centuries, the indigenous people have found sustenance in and around these waters. It is a reminder that there is incredible bounty on the earth, though many of us have lost the art of finding, or even seeing, it. But in places like this, our eyes begin to open again.
