hide story
The rugged beauty of this late afternoon panorama seems almost like a myth. You could imagine it as a scene from The Lord of the Rings or from some ancient Northern Hemisphere legend. In reality though, this is a lonely bay on Norfolk Island’s north-east coast in the south Pacific. The waterfall cascades down the rock-face, while beneath is a scattering of rocks, shining green and somewhat elf-like. The starkness of the boulders and the cliffs contrasts beautifully with the feathery shapes of pines on the headland and the gentle dream-like surf. Over the sea are those darkening purple clouds. This is the sort of scene you could lose yourself in. It feels like a different world.
