I have always loved the headland known as the “Skillion”, partly because it is one of the icons of my local area. But it’s also because the whole location is just a wonderful combination of ocean and rock. In this vertical shot, the Skillion is reduced to a background element, and the sea and rock platforms are given centre stage. The ocean is in one of its rough moods. Waiting for this shot, I was precariously balanced on some rocks and had to jump to safety whenever the big waves rolled in. But finally I got the break I needed. I loved the drama - the swirling clouds obscuring the sunrise and the glowing, mist-like wash of surf. The scene seemed full of emotion. It was as if sea and sky had come alive!
