Cast and crew look on as Jim Caviezel, in full costume, comforts a runaway lamb. One of many animals used during the filming of The Passion of the Christ, this lamb had escaped onto the streets of the specially constructed Jerusalem set in the Italian town of Matera. Here Jim Caviezel gently soothes the escapee that had been rushing wildly through the crowd just moments before. For Ken Duncan, this was one of those chance shots on the set that ended up capturing so much. The lamb, a symbol of both innocence and sacrifice in the ancient world, is embraced by the figure of Christ on his way to the cross. Yet it is also a moment charged with great tenderness and even joy. Those present cannot help but be affected, each in their own way.
