hide story
Normanton Railway Station is an abiding example of early Australian architecture. When it was built, the intention was to connect the railway line all the way through to Brisbane. But the line only ever reached Croydon, 150 kilometres away, and the dream was never fulfilled. A Croydon group rushed ahead, using a different gauge of track to connect with Brisbane. The grand old station still attracts tourists to marvel a vision that went slightly off track. The moral of this story is – be sure to gauge whether the track your life is on will take you all the way.
