Kitchen Hut, on The Overland Track which runs from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, is one of several alpine huts built to provide shelter for people making the 4-5 day hike along this classic Australian bush-walking track. This area of Tasmania is renowned for its unpredictable climate and can be very dangerous even in the summer months. Many people have died when caught unprepared by a radical weather change that suddenly transformed a sunny day into a raging snowstorm. This hut has great character developed over years of withstanding extreme weather conditions. I particularly like the two-door concept – if the bottom door is covered by snow, you can enter through the top door.
