hide story
A chill, misty morning is warmed here by a bright campfire and the refuge of a high country hut. Such huts - so full of history and folklore - are found at locations all over Victoria’s Alpine National Park. This one, in the southern part of the park, is among the lesser known, though it is still used by visitors as a welcome shelter from the elements. Like other similar dwellings, it harks back to the days of Australia’s legendary cattlemen. These mountain men knew the landscape intimately, and were as tough as the conditions that were constantly thrown against them. Though little remains of their glory days, their inspiration and legend live on.
