Discover China Through the Lens

10 to 22 October 2017

China has far more to offer than the usual tourist destinations where most visitors are taken.  As interesting as those places are, they simply don’t give you an ‘insider’s view of China.

There are few places in the world that can match the magic of China.  I want to show you China as I know it - a land of beauty, a land of contrast, a land of mystery.

This new China tour has been specifically designed with keen photographers in mind.  Note that I didn’t say ‘professional’ photographers! You certainly don’t need to be even an experienced photographer to enjoy all the benefits of this tour.  But you won’t want to be there without a camera.  It’s simply too fascinating not to record.  Whatever level of photography you’re currently at, shooting alongside me and learning from me at some of the magnificent locations on this tour is certain to improve your skills.

What is missing from most China tours is the ability to experience its spectacular landscapes. So I want to show you the most beautiful landscapes – those wonderful, hidden places, where few overseas tourists have ever been, even to this day.

And also sadly lacking in most tours - not just to China – is any consideration for the seasons and when the locations are at their best.  This new tour is based around showing you a really good insider’s view of China adorned in its autumn glory.

The timing of this trip has been planned perfectly to several locations at their peak.  Maple trees in autumn splendour reflected in the mirror-like surface of West Lake in Hangzhou, is a sight that will linger in your memory.

When you behold the serene mountain vistas and ‘four ultimate beauties’ of Huanshan, you will immediately understand how it has so greatly inspired countless Chinese poets and artists.

The world heritage listed area of Jiuzhaigou boasts snow-capped peaks, a diverse forest eco-system, fascinating limestone formations, waterfalls and hot springs.  This is one of my favourite regions of China.  I’ve been there on 3 occasions now and will show you the wonderful viewpoints I’ve found.  The timing of our trip is planned to coincide with the changing of the seasons, which will be spectacular in the Huanglong Valley area.

We’re also going to another area with beautiful pools and limestone formations that very few people get to, called Goddess Lake, which is truly breathtaking.

This is the priceless stuff that eludes so many visitors to China.  Why?  Because it’s simply not on normal itineraries.

You will marvel at the fine examples of carefully preserved architecture on the Ancient Street of Tunxi and the protected cultural site of Ciqikou Old Town, which dates back more than 1,700 years. And of course there will be time for shopping in some of the towns, with the opportunity to pick up beautiful clothing, craftwork and silk embroidery - or even valuable artworks - at great prices.

Of course, no visit to China would be complete without a visit to the Giant Panda Sanctuary in Chengdu.  So of course we will do that.  And you will also experience the life of old Chengdu, including architecture from the Qing Dynasty, quaint restaurants and traditional tea houses.

Speaking of tea, you will see vast tea terraces and be treated to a traditional tea ceremony as your immaculately dressed hostess explains the health benefits of the various tea varieties.

If you are dying to see The Great Wall, the Summer Palace and the Forbidden City, that’s fine.  You can always add a couple of days on before or after this tour and see those places.  But we are going to concentrate on the lesser-known destinations – as I said before, the hidden places where you wouldn’t normally be taken.

The cultural show included in this trip is absolutely world class.  Some of the best shows I’ve ever seen in all my travels have been in China.  The scale, the discipline, the skill, the colour and the artistry will astound you.

I’m really thankful to the team at Helen Wong’s tours for working with us to prepare this wonderful expedition.  Whether you’re a photographer or not, this is your chance to experience parts of China that few other will ever get to see.

I have personally fallen in love with China and just love continuing to peel away the layers to get to the heart of what makes this ancient and mysterious land so spectacular.

So, if you would like to discover the real China, to see enough to feel it’s heart beat, then you simply must come with me in October so I can show you all I’ve learned about this amazing nation and its fascinating culture.
