I had already been shooting for some days at Ebor Falls when I thought I needed to get further away to try and put the waterfall into perspective. So I went right up on this hillside – where I thought most people would never venture. To me, this really helped capture the overall feeling and balance of this location. The waterfall is seen plunging into the valley, but here it is just one element in a larger, more subtle scene. Rugged trees lean towards the mist-shrouded gorge (it was a very cold morning!) and sprays of green grass, moistened by recent rains, cling to the steeply falling hillside. Overhead, the branches frame far-away cliffs and the spreading canopy of the forest. It was a reminder that even spectacular phenomena – like large waterfalls – have their own locality and ‘home’. Their beauty is enhanced when seen in the context of their total environment.
