This magnificent sunrise scene at Queenscliff Beach makes use of a phenomenon that is relatively common but is not always easy to capture on film. A wave has washed over the beach, providing a spectacular but very short-lived mirror. The key to this sort of photograph is to wait until a breaker has spilled a fine layer of water over the compressed sand beneath. The opportunity lasts only a moment before the image melts away again into the sand, and you need to shoot from a very low angle to get the most from the reflection. But the result – as seen here – can be wonderful, throwing the glory of the sky over the entire foreground.
