Twenty years ago we had fantastic freedom in Australia. We could drive all around The Olgas (Kata Tjuta) on old dirt roads and we had open access for photography. Now, in our times of political correctness, restrictions abound for many reasons. Partly due to Aboriginal spiritual concerns, this area can no longer be visited or photographed. It seems to be getting harder and harder to shoot the natural beauty of creation. The sad thing is that such restrictions often go against the fundamental understanding of many of the indigenous people themselves. As one of my own friends, an indigenous elder, so aptly put it: “We do not own the land. It owns us.” My hope is that such an open-minded attitude will again prevail in the future, though we may have to fight for it. Then a new generation of photographers can enjoy what I did when I took this shot all those years ago.
