A lighthouse on a bare hill marks the north-east corner of Rottnest Island. These waters (known as The Basin) are a popular swimming spot for visitors to Rottnest. On sunny days the bay sparkles in a brilliant display of aqua and deep blue. In the far distance, some thirty kilometres away, the skyline of Perth is faintly discernible as a tiny blur on the horizon. The name Rottnest derives from the Dutch for "Rats Nest", an early allusion to the island s population of native quokka. Settlement on the island began in 1830 and there remain many historic buildings. These days Rottnest Island is a holiday playground for visitors from Perth, accessible by high-speed ferry and passing yachts. As this shot shows, it is the sort of place you go to when you want to 'get away from it all'.
