Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana has created an amazing hide by sinking a shipping container into the ground by a waterhole. It’s interesting to be in a confined space with people, eagerly waiting for action, when you can only speak in gentle whispers. You don’t want to be ‘that person’ who scared the wildlife away! Apart from the occasional birds, there was little happening, and we began to discuss leaving to find another location. Then along came a large herd of elephants and our retreat was cut off. There were so many elephants at the waterhole, wandering all over the place. We had wanted wildlife, but perhaps we should have put a quota on what we asked for. The big matriarch on the right was obviously agitated. She knew we were close by, but elephants don’t have particularly good eyesight, so she couldn’t quite see us. She started to walk up over our hide and we wondered just how strong that container was. Fortunately, she settled down (I think she sensed we meant no harm), so we were able to get some amazing photos from this unique angle.
